Abstract

580,838. Compound sheet materials; weftless cord fabrics. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. July 1, 1945, No. 13782. Convention date, Aug. 15, 1944. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXXIV] Relates to tyres of the kind described in Specification 565,162, [Group XXXIV], in which the rubber or like elastic material 29 used in the tread zone of the fabric foundation has a low modulus and low hysteresis, that 30 in the seal-wall and bead zone being of high modulus. According to the present invention, strips of the different plastic compositions are assembled side by side to form a graded composite strip which is then calendered on to a strip 21 of bias cord fabric. The latter, produced by ordinary methods embodies cords 10 skimcoated with thin rubber layers and made up with a liner strip into a stock roll 24. This strip is fed between the lower pair of calendered rolls 27. The plastic compositions 29-30 being calendered between the upper pair of rolls. Feeding-spacers 28 and edge-trimming knives 35 are fitted as shown. The composite strip is consolidated by a roller 31 which is pulled towards the delivery side of the calender by a spring 33. The composite plastic layer may extend over the full width of the cord strip or, as indicated in Fig. 10 the edge portions 40 of the latter may be uncovered in some of the plies; and, the cord layer may be similarly faced on both sides.
