668,253. Filling thermostat tubes. VAPOR HEATING CORPORATION. Sept. 25, 1950 [Oct. 6, 1949], No. 23486/50. Class 125(ii) Thermostat tubes 31 are filled with mercury by placing them open and downwards in a beaker 21 in a chamber 5, applying heat from infra-red lamps located above the chamber to dry the tubes, placing an air tight dome 8 over the chamber and evacuating the chamber by a mercury vapour diffusion pump 11 and a conventional vacuum pump connected to a pipe 17 while mercury vapour is diffused throughout the chamber, running a pool of liquid mercury into the beaker so as to cover the mouths of the tubes and opening a needle valve 16 to allow entry of atmospheric air into the chamber to force the mercury into the tubes. The tubes 31 are placed on a grid 22 in the beaker to keep their mouths off the bottom. The mercury vapour and liquid are supplied from a tube 19 connected to a heated flask 18 so supported in a stand 23 that it can be positioned to supply either vapour or liquid. The diffusion pump 11 has cooling coils 12.
