Abstract

624,966. Refrigerating; drying containers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 18, 1947, No. 19246. Convention date, July 24, 1946. [Classes 29, 34(ii), 64(i) and 64(ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] Metal containers such as the bellows 20 and capillary tube 22 of the thermostatic control of a refrigerating system are dehydrated before fitting into the system by heating the container in the vapour of a volatile liquid 52 while alternately evacuating the container and charging it with dry gas. The container is supported upon a member 24 hinged at 26 to the side of an insulated vessel 28 containing tetrachloroethylene heated by an electric heater 54. The member 24 is raised on its hinge, the capillary tube 22 connected to a coupling 32 and then lowered into the vessel 28 so that the container is heated by the vapours of the liquid. A valve 36 is then manipulated to connect the container alternately to a vacuum vessel 38 and a source 40 of dry gas, such as air or nitrogen. After several minutes the container is removed and replaced by another to be dried. The coupling 32 comprises a sealing grommet forced on the tube 22 by air pressure under the control of a valve 50. To prevent escape of vapours from the vessel 28 water cooling pipes 56 are provided around its mouth to condense the vapours.
