Abstract

Solid and liquid foods, chemicals and plasma are desiccated without deterioration by exposing the substance to reduced pressure at a temperature below 50 DEG C., condensing and freezing the vapours, which are evolved, upon a surface maintained at a temperature below 0 DEG C., and repeatedly removing the solidified condensate from the surface while the process is in operation. The pressure is preferably maintained between 0.1 and 10mm., and the temperature of the condensing surface between -40 DEG and -70 DEG C. The substance to be desiccated is introduced through a duct 12 into vessel 10 which is connected to a vacuum pump at 20 through port 18, condenser 26, receiver 62 and auxiliary condenser 92. The substance is agitated during desiccation and may be heated to prevent excessive lowering of its temperature which may occur owing to rapid vaporisation. The vapours evolved are condensed and solidified on the cylindrical inner surface of condenser 26 from <PICT:0586693/III/1> <PICT:0586693/III/2> which the solid is continuously removed by a rotary scraper 36, extending longitudinally through the condenser, and deposited into the refrigerated receiver 62 kept at a temperature less than 10 DEG C. above the temperature of condenser 26. The purpose of the auxiliary condenser 92, which is equipped with a rotary scraper 104, is to ensure that no vapour, sublimed from receiver 62, reaches the vacuum pump. A grinder may be placed in the inlet duct 12 before the valve 13 if it is desired to reduce a solid to small particles before desiccation. The substance may be heated by placing it between condenser plates connected to a high frequency electric current, or by the use of an infra red lamp.
