In principe wordt de condensor in de droogvriestechniek gekoeld op lagere temperatuur dan de invriestemperatuur van de produkten in de droogkamer. Bedoelde invriestemperatuur kan tot minimale temperaturen van gassen in vloeibare toestand zoals stikstof gaan. Als condensoppervlakte zijn momenteel gebruikelijk : a) koelslangen waarin een koelmedium circuleert ;
EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Method for optimizing the operation of a condenser to be used in freeze-drying techniques and the equipment used therein"
This invention relates to a method for optimizing the operation of a condenser to be used in drying freezing techniques, such as, inter alia, in drying processes and vacuum distillation processes.
In what is generally referred to hereinafter as "freeze-drying techniques", the ice sublimes from the products to be dried. This sublimation forms condensable vapors, these vapors are eventually captured back in the form of ice on cooled surfaces of a condenser. Although, in addition to the condensable vapors, non-condensable vapors also exist in such processes, these will not be discussed further. For example, non-condensable vapors come from the leakage of the installations, but can also be introduced deliberately for various purposes.
In principle, the condenser in the freeze-drying technique is cooled at a lower temperature than the freezing temperature of the products in the drying chamber. The said freezing temperature can go to minimum temperatures of gases in the liquid state such as nitrogen. Currently the usual condensing surface are: a) cooling hoses in which a cooling medium circulates;
EMI1.1
b) cooled plates in which a cooling medium also circulates c) one or more cooled walls.
The three condensing surfaces of a condenser referred to above can be built into a separate condensation space attached to the drying chamber or in the drying chamber itself. By the term "drying chamber" is meant the space in which the product to be dried is introduced.
Eventually, the moisture of the products to be dried will fully settle on the above-mentioned refrigerated
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the surfaces. For the sake of completeness, it should be noted that a negligible amount of vapors can be vented directly to the atmosphere through the vacuum system. It is therefore clear that the condenser must have a condensing surface that is large enough to allow all the moisture of a full load of products to be dried: a) to be able to freeze and b) to retain the continuously thickening layer of ice until eventually all condensable vapors are frozen on it. ie The condensed area also provides the storage area for the entire charge of moisture to be removed from the product.
On an industrial scale, a compromise is accepted between the condensing surface of a condenser and the allowable ice thickness on such a surface. Every inch of ice thickness causes a temperature loss. This means that on the surface of an ice layer of a centimeter thickness a temperature of -50 ° C, while when this ice layer becomes 2 to 3 cm thicker, this thicker layer shows a markedly higher temperature on its surface. This is extremely important because the surface temperature here is also the condensing temperature of the condensable vapors. Due to the impermissible thicker ice layers, this temperature can become so high that the dry-freezing process is no longer guaranteed. In practice, this compromise leads to very large condensers with large condensing areas.
In particularly large industrial installations, the condenser becomes so large that two or more condensers are added to the drying chamber. During the process these condensers can usually be separated from the drying chamber with a valve in order to use this alternative.
From the descriptions quoted above, it is clear that the condenser in the dry freezing process is a large, cumbersome and therefore also a very expensive aggregate.
The object of the invention is therefore to prescribe a method which provides a radical solution to the problems posed. The invention also relates to a device to be used in the context of the method according to the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In order to solve the problems discussed in the preamble, the method according to the invention is characterized in that means are used to mechanically remove the ice that has formed on the condenser, in accordance with a time schedule that the condensers only function as the condensable condensate vapors into ice, but do not hold this ice on the condenser.
According to the invention, the ice formed on the condensers is continuously removed, which means that the ice after its formation on the condensers is mechanically disappeared and the ice layer formed is not allowed to grow until a reduction in the efficiency of the condenser could be observed.
Other details and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a method of optimizing the operation of a condenser to be used in dry freezing techniques and of the device used in the context of the method according to the invention. This description is given by way of example only and does not limit the invention. The reference numbers refer to the attached figures.
Figure 1 shows schematically a condenser with scraper and sluice mechanism to be used in the dry freezing technique.
Figure 2 is a schematic representation of a variant of the invention.
Figure 3 is a schematic diagram of a possible lock system in its simplest version.
The devices illustrated by both figures (Figures 1 and 2) are based on the same principle, which is to systematically or continuously scrape the ice that forms on a condenser during a dry freezing process. The terms "systematic" or "continuous" are to be understood in the sense that it is systematically prevented that condensable vapors deposited on the condensers in the form of ice must never be allowed to condense for so long.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and freeze that the condenser's efficiency will decrease significantly. The continuous or systematic scraping therefore means that this operation may also take place with small interruptions, provided that the condensation surfaces only to condense the condensable vapors to ice but no longer adhere to the condensation surfaces.
An example of a device for applying this method is shown in figure 1. In figure 1 there is, on the one hand, the drying chamber 1, the vacuum system 2 with the condenser 3 intervening, which forms a tunnel-shaped space which is directly connected to the drying chamber 1, on the one hand, and with the vacuum system just mentioned, on the other hand.
The condensable vapors are turned to ice on the inner surface 3 'of the condenser 3.
A screw 4, which is driven from motor 5, is mounted in the center line of the tunnel-shaped space that forms the condenser 3. The dimensions of the blades of the screw 4 are calculated so that they almost touch their outer ends 4 'on the inner surface of the condenser so that the scraping operation can be carried out very accurately. The length of the screw depends on the dimensions of the inner and outer surface of the condenser.
Since the screw 4 not only has to scrape but also displace the ice that has formed on the inner wall of the condenser, in the sense of movement of the scraped and displaced ice a vacuum-tight seal 6 can be provided at the bottom of a funnel 7 which connects laterally to the wall of the tunnel condenser.
Figures 1 and 2 each show a vacuum-tight seal consisting of a cylinder 8 with a collecting cup 9 which rotates in a second cylinder 10 in a vacuum-tight manner. The second cylinder
10 is closely connected to the lower part of the funnel 7 and has a discharge opening 11 at the bottom through which the scraped off and ice collected in the collecting vessel 9 is discharged.
Before proceeding to the description
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of the variant according to figure 2 it can immediately be said that the newly described lock 6 can be replaced by a very simple structure which is made clear by figure 3 and which essentially consists of a vacuum-tight valve 12 which is connected at the bottom end of the funnel 7 and through which the scraped ice can be periodically discharged into a tub 13 which is connected to the vacuum system 2 so that the necessary underpressure in the tub 13 can be maintained.
Emptying of the tub 13 can occasionally be done by thawing the ice in the said tub at the end of the dry-freezing process and removing it as condensate via a condensate valve 14.
Thus, such a very easy to construct lock can replace the more complicated ones 6 shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The embodiment or variant according to figure 2 differs essentially exclusively from the embodiment according to figure 1: because a tunnel 15 is connected to the drying chamber 1 and communicates with the vacuum system 2, the condenser here is formed by a cylinder 17 which is cooled internally and is connected to the cooling group 16.
The ice formed on the outer surface is scraped here by a continuously reciprocating scraping blade 18. The scraped ice also ends up here in the funnel 7 and can then be discharged through lock 6 or by using the structures according to figure 3.
In the embodiments according to the figures
1 and 2, the scraping is carried out according to such a rhythm that the ice layer internally or externally formed on the condenser never has a chance to thicken because the newly formed ice layer can be scraped continuously.
Although both examples of Figures 1 and 2 deal with the specific case of cylindrical spaces, the condenser may also take the form of a vertically arranged plate from which the ice is scraped regularly or continuously and through the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
gravity falls to the bottom-placed lock.
In its practical implementation, thanks to the current state of the art, the scraping can be performed such that the ice thickness never exceeds a thickness ranging from a few tenths of a millimeter to a few millimeters. Decisive for the permissible maximum ice thickness on the condenser that will not be scraped is the practical manufacturing clearance on the construction of the mechanical parts and not the consideration of the necessary cold energy, to underline that the construction of both the scraper mechanism and the sassen can be regarded as very simple.
As previously explained, the condenser according to the invention does not have to store the ice formed except for a thickness as set out below, so that the necessary cooling energy can be remarkably smaller than with a classically built condenser that retains the thickening ice layer under ice form. The amount of vapors to be condensed varies in an industrial dry freezing process from 0, ... to tens of kg / h. Compared to a conventional condenser, the scraping condenser according to the invention is not only easy to construct, but is also clearly smaller. It only needs to supply the cold surface to convert the x kg / h condensable vapors into ice and to retain an extremely thin layer of ice.
Finally, it should be noted that the method and the device according to the invention offer the following advantages: a) The vacuum group can be kept small to very small, so it is cheaper to purchase and to use; b) The global installation area will also decrease which means profit in m2. This advantage will certainly be appreciated among others in the pharmaceutical world where dry freezers find their place in expensive sterile rooms. c) Due to the smaller condenser structure, the possible sterilization process with, for example, superheated steam will be really simple and cheaper.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
d) The globally smaller volumes also simplify the vacuum process control.
