Abstract

668,038. Welding by pressure. MALLORY METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS, Ltd. May 24, 1950 [June 15, 1949], No. 13031/50. Class 83 (iv). A resistance welding electrode comprises a body 14 and a cap 11 having an outer working face 12 the cap being rotatably and detachably pressure-mounted on the body 14 and coolant fluid sealing means interposed between said cap and body portions. The cap 11 has an arcuately-shaped inside surface 13 which embraces a ball end 15 on the body 14 for universal movement. The body 14 has a central bore 24 and a tapered end portion 18 which fits into an electrode holder 22. A tube 22a in the bore 25 conducts a coolant fluid to the inside surface 13 of the cap. A recess 30 may be formed in the cap 11 to assist cooling and leakage of the coolant is prevented by a rubber or fibre washer 32 housed in a groove 31 cut either in the ball end 15 or in the cap 11. This seal may also in the form shown in Fig. 1, assist in retaining the ball-engaging portion of the cap which has a crimped or corrugated collar portion to enable the cap to be readily placed on, and removed from, the ball end 15.
