Abstract

667,988. Box liners for trenches. STENGEL, E., and KLOTZ, G. Jan. 17, 1950. [Jan, 24. 1949] No. 1236/50. Class 85. A box liner 13 for use in trenching comprises a box-like structure 2 of rectangular crosssection in which apertures 4 are provided at the lower ends of two opposite sides thereof, closure means being provided for the apertures. The liner sides are double-walled and reinforced, the lower ends 3 of the wall being tapered off to form a cutting edge whilst at the upper end, for receiving a load to assist in the sinking of the liner into the ground, are containers 5, 7 which can discharge the load into the liner at the completion of the operation. In use, a number of these liners I, II and III are sunk, the apertures 4 being in alignment along the intended line of the trench, and that part of the earth 10 between the successive liners in line with the apertures is removed so that a pipe or cable duct 9 can be laid in the tunnel so formed.
