Abstract
589,144. Escape ways for mines &c. BOWMAN, A. E., and COCKETT, A. J. (Representatives of BOWMAN, R. W.). Nov. 20, 1944, No. 23007. (Class 85] An escape way for mines and other underground workings consists of a tube way embedded below the floor of a gallery and provided at spaced points with covered hatchways through which persons may enter and leave the tube way to circumvent an obstruction. The tube way preferably comprises earthenware, concrete or iron pipes 12, 13, jointed and sealed end-to-end in a trench and surrounded with concrete 16, reinforced by longitudinal and circumferential metal rods 17. The pipes 13 have branch openings 14 normally closed by covers 8, with finger holds 15, or other means facilitating removal. Hand or toe holds 18 are provided in the pipes ; an anchored rope may be provided from end-to-end of the tube way and have looped, knotted or other hand holds. Sleds, preferably curved to fit the bottom of the tube way and mounted on ball &c. runners, may be provided for transport of injured persons. The tube way may alternatively be formed of concrete moulded in situ ; it may also have branches extending along lateral galleries, or several tube ways may extend from a common point or be interconnected.
