Abstract
667,609. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Feb. 22, 1950 [March 26, 1949], No. 4523/50. Class 35. A dynamo-electric machine is cooled by a liquid fluorocarbon having a boiling-point of between 15 and 150 C. which is pumped inside the machine and collected in a vapour state to be condensed again. A pump 62 causes the liquid, e.g. perfuoromethylcyclohexane, perfluoroheptane, to flow in spaced passages 56 formed in the stator laminations 50 and, by contact, this liquid absorbs any excess heat in the laminations 50. The liquid then flows in slots 52 to the adjacent vapour outlet passages 66 and escapes into a chamber 68 whence it is drawn out by a fan 76 and directed to a condenser 80. The rotor, which is separated from the stator by members 40, 42, is cooled by a stream of gas, e.g. hydrogen, circulated by a fan 22, a water cooler for the hydrogen being provided.
