667,029. Making cycle-frames. BISMARKWERKE STAHL - UND METALLVERARBEITUNGS-AKT.-GES., and ALBERT, W. May 9, 1949, No. 12379/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Brazing; assembling force fits.-In brazing tube joints for bicycle frames and the like, in which the end of a tube or plug is inserted within the end of a larger diameter tube or sleeve with an intermediate layer of brazing metal the overlapping faces are in heat-conductive contact over part of the joint length and the tubes are heated by electric induction. A tube 3 with a circmnferential groove 4 for a split ring 5 of brazing metal is a close fit in a tube 1 which is inductively heated over the portion c of its length by an induction spool. The tubes may also be a force fit over the length b and may be cooled over this region during the brazing process by a cold water spray from a surrounding tube. The groove 4 for the brazing metal may be omitted and replaced by several recesses for plates of brazing metal or by a reduced diameter end which is coated with brazing metal. The tube ends may be cleaned by etching or sand blasting and may be phosphated. The tubes are preferably held vertically during brazing and the flux used is preferably pasty to serve as a lubricant during assembly. In brazing a pair of frame tubes to the steering column of a bicycle a pair of induction coils may be united to form a spectacle shape on a holder for simultaneously heating both tubes.
