666,824. Electric measuring apparatus. SIGMA INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd., BOOSEY, F. R., and HAMILTON, J. H. Oct. 11, 1950. [Oct. 11, 1949] No. 26118/49. Class 40 (i). A differentially variable inductance for use in measuring apparatus comprises two magnetic yokes 1, 5, each having three pole-pieces forming three co-operating polepairs. The yokes are secured together e.g. by lath springs 8, 10 permitting lateral rectilinear movement of one yoke relative to the other, by the variable being measured. Such movements vary the airgaps 11, 12 differentially by virtue of the opposite obliquity of the corresponding pole-faces, the gap 13 remaining substantially unchanged. The cross-sectional areas of the three gaps are maintained substantially constant by making the pole-pieces (i, 7, 8 of greater sectional area than the corresponding pole-pieces on yoke 1. Coils surround the pole-pairs 2, 7 and 3, 6 the inductance of these coils varying differentially with the corresponding airgaps. Specification 616,978 is referred to.
