Abstract
666,268. Control of A.C. motors. FERRANTI, Ltd., and WILLIAMSON, D. March 13, 1950. [March 15, 1949] No. 7022/49. Class 38 (iii). A two-phase induction motor 10 is energized from a single-phase supply, the voltage of which exceeds the working-voltage of the motor. A step-down transformer 11 has its primary winding connected to the supply and its secondary winding to a field winding 20 of the motor, the other field winding 21 being connected in series with a capacitor 22 across the supply. The capacitance of the element 22 is such that the voltage applied to the winding 21 approximates to the working-voltage of the motor, whilst the capacitor produces a phaseshift sufficiently approaching quadrature to afford satisfactory motor-operation. The element 11 may be replaced by an autotransformer, Fig. 2 (not shown), or a potentiometer. The motor may be of the synchronous or other two-phase type.
