Abstract
1456450 Control of AC motors H-F GUELDENER 17 April 1974 [17 April 1973] 16754/74 Heading H2J An asynchronous motor 2 is driven or braked according to the position of switches 10, 11 and 12, which are simultaneously controlled by a common actuating element 1 movable between an operating and a braking position corresponding to the following circuit conditions:- (1) Switch 10 closed to energize the stator windings 3, 4, 5 from a three phase supply RST, switch 11 open and switch 12 changed over to charge a capacitor 13 through a rectifier 6 and resistor 14 from the voltage between phase R and the neutral MP. (2) Switch 10 open, switch 11 closed to connect the rectifier 6 in parallel with the stator windings 3, 4 and switch 12 changed over to discharge the capacitor 13 through resistors 14, 15, 16 and a relay coil 8, whose contacts 9 close to connect the windings 3, 4 to the supply R, MP through a rectifier 7. The windings 3, 4 thus receive two half-wave rectified currents which are phase displaced by 180 degrees and thus combine to produce a smoothed D.C. braking current, whose component produced by rectifier 6 falls to zero as the induced voltage in windings 3, 4 reduces with decreasing motor speed. Adjustable resistor 15 is set so that the coil 8 is de-energized and contacts 9 open just after the motor has stopped, the component of braking current produced by the rectifier 7 thus being maintained for a time which may be varied according to the motor characteristics and the load to be braked. The described embodiment may be modified as follows:- (1) Members 7, 9 are replaced by a thyristor (37) whose firing current is made or broken by contacts (39) controlled by a relay coil (38), Fig. 2 (not shown). (2) Members 7, 9 are replaced by a thyristor (67) having a control current generator (79) adjustable to a desired pulse width to produce a desired mains component of braking current, the supply to the generator being taken from the supply R, MP through contacts (69) controlled by a relay coil (68), Fig. 3 (not shown). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,341,496.
