Relates to apparatus for use with electric arc welding or cutting equipment, comprising a face mask 1 having a coloured glass or glasses 3 movably mounted therein so as to assume either an operative position in which the eyes of a wearer are covered, or an inoperative position, and automatic means for moving said glass or glasses, the automatic means for moving the glass or glasses into the operative position comprising an electric circuit which includes the electrodes or the electrode E and the work W and electromagnets B and the automatic means for moving the glass or glasses into the inoperative position comprising a spring or springs 8, the arrangement being such that the glass or glasses are moved into the operative position and the full welding current is simultaneously switched on so that the welding or cutting operation can commence at the will of the operator when his eyes are already protected. According to the invention the electromagnets B are connected in series with a variable resistance R1 and a switch A, the latter being closed preparatory to the striking of the arc by an electromagnet C1 and held closed by a solenoid C2 as long as the arc is established. The solenoid C1 may be connected through a variable resistance R2 with the generator G and also with the electrode E, whereas solenoid C2 may be connected with the electrode and through a switch D with the generator, switch D being closed after switch A has closed. The coloured glass or glasses 3 may be mounted in frames 3a connected to the armatures of the electromagnets B, said frames being slidable in guides 4 so that the glasses may be moved into positions overlying plain glasses 2a seated over slots 2 in the mask 1. The armatures of the electromagnets B may be encircled by the springs 8.
