Abstract
505,304. Maintaining wakefulness; electric switches. SEQUIN, (nÚe NIGGL),. A. V., and HIRT, R. March 29, 1938, No. 9616. Convention date, May 27, 1937. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A device for maintaining wakefulness in motor-drivers, sentries and others is characterized in that the movement of the eyelid in closing is used to close an alarm circuit. As shown a metal rod a is connected to a bracket g by a ball joint c and has a terminal soft covering b. The bracket is mounted close to the eye, for example on the side frame f of spectacles n by a screw h, whereby the tip b rests lightly on the eyelid. The rod a has a contact d which, on lowering the eyelid and thereby moving the rod, contacts with an insulated plate e, or a spring connected thereto. Plate e is connected in a circuit containing bracket g, a battery, an alarm such as a bell, and a delay device, which latter prevents operation for momentary closures of the eye. The components of the circuit (not shown) may be carried in the pocket or in a hood or cap or may be mounted on the side Trame of the spectacles. The alarm device may include head-phones or may be associated with goggles. The rod a may be of rubber or the like carrying a contact piece or, where spectacles are not used, may be mounted on a rod passing over the ear, or on a cap. Two rods or feelers, one for each eye, may be connected into a single alarm circuit.
