[Also in Groups XIII and XXIX] When the blow down valve 121 of a steam trap (see Group XIII) of a locomotive steam drier is open, the pressure in a locomotive steam drier drain system forces a steam-condensate mixture tangentially into the upper cylindrical chamber 128 of a vortex separator 105 and during two stages of centrifugal separation the steam passes out at the top into the smoke stack of the locomotive and the water is ejected tangentially from the bottom chamber 129 through a drain outlet 131 on to the track.
