Abstract

665,611. Packing. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Dec. 16, 1948, No. 17956/48. Class 94(i). [Also in Groups XIX and XXX] In a machine for wrapping blocks or articles of friable material such as ice cream in which the articles are fed by a conveyer towards a transfer station at which they are transferred from the conveyer towards wrapping elements by a transfer member, a feeler member is arranged to move towards a surface of each article on the conveyer in turn so as to be arrested by the article, an abutment on a pivoted arm carrying the feeler member, being arranged on pivotal movement of the arm to move into or out of the path of a movable controlling member according as the article is of normal or abnormal thickness, the controlling member governing the transfer of the article to the wrapping elements. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, blocks 11 of ice cream are carried in pockets 12 carried by a conveyer chain 13. A feeler member 16<SP>1</SP> is carried by an arm 16 of a two-armed lever 16, 17 which is freely pivoted at 18. The arm 17 carries a cam follower 19 which co-operates with a cam 21, and carries an abutment 24. One arm 27 of a two-armed lever 27, 28 freely pivoted at 29, carries a cam follower 31 which is downwardly urged into engagement with a cam 32 by a spring 33. The arm 28 is forked at its outer end, the prongs being in alignment with lateral slots in tne pockets 12. The arm 27 carries an abutment 26. In operation, the feeler 16<SP>1</SP> moves down under the action of the cam 21, into engagement with the upper surface of a block of ice cream. lf the surface is normal, the position of the feeler 16<SP>1</SP> is such that the abutment 24 lies in the path of the abutment 26 when the lever 27, 28 moves clockwise and prevents it moving to ejection position. Otherwise the feeler 16<SP>1</SP> moves down further, and the abutment 26 is not impeded by the abutment 24. The lever 28 thus moves to its extreme right position and displaces the faulty block from the conveyer. The cams 21, 32 are arranged so that the feeler 16<SP>1</SP> commences moving upwards before operation of the ejector 28. Damaged articles may alternatively be carried on beyond the transfer station by the conveyer. The controlling member may operate through suitable electrical or mechanical delayed-action mechanism.
