Abstract
665,480. Making compound bearings. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd., and FORRESTER, P. G. April 6, 1950 [April 29, 1949], No. 11444/49. Class 83 (ii). In a method of making bearings having an anti-friction metal lining bonded to a steel backing, the steel backing is preliminarily treated to produce a highly polished surface thereon. An active flux such as zinc chloride, or a mild flux preceded by a light acid etch, may then be applied, the backing is passed through molten tin, excess tin drained off and an anti-friction metal such as a tin base babbitt alloy flowed on. The steel backing may be degreased before or after the polishing operation. The polished surface on the backing may be produced by surface abrasion with emery powder applied as by a leather buff, followed by polishing with a fluid which may contain fine silica or alumina in suspension in water with a mild degreasing addition and a wetting agent.
