Class 86 [Also in Group I] Apparatus for coagulation comprises a basin, an inlet into the basin, an outlet from the basin functionally remote from the inlet and establishing the normal liquid level in the basin, the basin being free of partitions interposed in the path of flow from the inlet to the outlet, and rotor means comprising a rotatable horizontally extending shaft, blade supporting means affixed to, and extending outwardly from, the shaft, and a plurality of blades affixed to and extending horizontally from one side of said blade supporting means, said blades extending inwardly from the periphery of the plate only part-way to the horizontal axis of rotation, the shaft being at an elevation such that the blade supporting means are below the normal liquid level in the basin as established by the outlet. In Fig. 1 the rotors 30a and 30b are carried upon a shaft 33 arranged longitudinally within the basin 11, the basin having an inlet 20 shielded by a baffle 60 which prevents the high velocity of discharging liquid from distorting the vortex flow created by the rotors. The outlet of the basin is at 24. Each rotor comprises a disc 32 having blades 31 mounted radially or at an angle to the radius of the disc. The diameter of the rotor is of the order of from about one-half to about seventenths of the normal depth of liquid in said basin whilst the shaft is spaced above the floor of the: basin a distance of less than half the normal liquid depth. The width of the blades 31 may be about one-seventh of the diameter of the disc and their length about one-third the diameter of the disc. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the rotors are carried on separate shafts extending transversely across the basin and spaced longitudinally of the basin. The rotors may be rotated in opposite directions.
