Abstract
665,378. Mining-machines. HOPKINSON, & CO., Ltd., A. and SIDEBOTTOM, T. March 31, 1950. [March 8, 1949] No. 6247/49. Class 68 (i). In the centre portion of a pick box for coal cutter chains is a tapered socket 1 that is either vertical or forwardly inclined relative to the line joining the connecting pivot pin axes of the box and in the socket is positioned one or more picks P, the shank or shanks of which have a taper corresponding to that of the socket and the lateral position of the pick or picks relative to the box can be varied by menas of distance pieces 4. In one form of box the distance pieces are separate and movable within the socket, whilst in another form the distance pieces are integral with the centre portion to subdivide the socket so as to provide a separate socket for each pick. Screw holes in the outer face of the centre portion penetrate into the socket at an angle thereto so that a set screw 2 can engage the pick in each lateral position to lock it in the socket. When the socket is forwardly inclined with respect to the line joining the pivot pin axes, the set screws are at right angles to said lines. A hole 3 is formed through the side of the box so that it intersects the inner ends of the pick shanks so enabling a drift to free the picks from the sockets. The box may have bossed side ribs or a central rib.
