Abstract

665,102. Carroting and drying furs. JONAS & NAUMBURG CORPORATION. Jan. 2, 1948 [July 10, 1944], No. 152/48. Class 76. [Also in Group XIII] Apparatus for treating wetted or moistened fur-bearing animal skins comprises a heating-chamber, means disposed within said chamber to generate radiant energy of sufficient intensity to singe the fur fibres, if the atmosphere in said chamber is maintained substantially quiescent, and means for forcing a large volume of air through said chamber to maintain the atmosphere in said chamber in a state of turbulence adjacent the surface of the skins. A combined carroting and drying apparatus is shown comprising an insulated heating chamber 10 and associated drying tunnel 11, mounted on a frame 12 at the head of which is carroting equipment A and at the tail a brushing device B. Filtered air from blower 15 is forced into the chamber 10 through the port 17 and hence into tunnel 11 and chimney 20. Four burners 40 are provided in the bottom of the chamber and one in the top wall. Each burner has a shut-off valve 41, a mixer valve 43 connected to a gas manifold 44 and to an air manifold 50a. The burner ports 52 direct the combustion gases against the upwardly-curved surfaces 53 of refractory members 51 which are thereby heated to incandescence. Each burner has a pilot burner 55, thus enabling the burners to be turned on or off without opening the chamber. The skins 50 are conveyed through the heating chamber clamped between a pair of metal endless openmesh conveyer belts 21 and 24 driven by suitable mechanism at the same linear speed. The upper run 32 of the lower conveyer belt 24 extends beyond the upper conveyer belt 21 to form a feeder platform 33. The upper conveyer belt 24 extends beyond the lower belt 21, at the discharge end of the apparatus, to carry the skins over a rotary brush 34. The carroting device A comprises a rubber feeding conveyer 72, a rotary brush 73, which picks up the carroting solution from a bath 74, together with brushes 76 for brushing the solution into the feed. In operation, the furs 50 pass through the carroting device pelt side up, into the chamber 10 with burners and air blast in operation, through tunnel 11, over brush 34 and down shoot 65. Preferred operating temperatures are heating chamber 150‹ to 500‹ F.; air blast 6000 cubic feet/min.; and conveyer speeds such that the skins pass through the heater in 10 to 30 seconds and the tunnel in approximately three minutes.
