Abstract
665,035. Nailing, BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). July 27, 1950 [July 28, 1949], No. 19821/49. Class 89 (iii). In an apparatus for supplying fasteners (e.g. nails) to a machine for attaching heels to shoes which includes a rotary nail drum 54 and an oscillating nail carrier 44 comprising raceways 46 and nailways 48, the nail carrier is mounted on springs 38, 40 for movement lengthwise of the raceways and nailways. Vibration of the carrier 44 is effected by a compound eccentric 318, Fig. 12, on a shaft 538, 550 driven by a belt 138 and pulley 534 from a continuously driven shaft 72. An eccentric 564 is mounted on eccentric portions 542, 548 of the shaft 538, and counterweights 560 are mounted on opposed eccentric portions 556, 558. The eccentric 564 operates a connecting rod 574 to which is fixed an inertia device 576 which is secured to leaf springs 580 fixed at their upper ends to the carrier 44. Adjustment of the various eccentric portions and the counterweights is effected by a rod 592. The nails pass from the main portions 316 of the raceways 46 through an adjustable gap 390 which ensures that they will slide head first down arcuate portions 382 to the nailways 48 and thence to an inverter roll 134 and by passages 204 (not shown) to the loader block of a heel-attaching machine. Oscillating cleaver prongs 326, 370 (not shown), are provided between adjacent raceways or nailways to knock transversely-lying nails into the raceways or nailways, or through the spaces therebetween for return to the drum 54. For short nails, a known oscillating roll 134 is employed, but for longer nails a rotary roll is provided having diametrical holes 670, Fig. 20A, or pairs of holes 630, Fig. 20, offset from the axis of the roll, successive holes or pairs of holes being in directions at right angles to one another. An adjustable spring-pressed stop 464 is provided beyond the roll 134. The nail drum 54 is supported on sleeves 174 coupled together by a belt 170 and driven at either of two speeds through gears 158, 160, operated by one of a pair of gears 148, 150 which are slidable, by means of a yoke 152, on a shaft 144 driven by a worm 140 and gear 142 from the continuously driven shaft 72. The shaft 144 carries a cam 186 which houses a one-revolution clutch controlled by the heelattaching machine. The cam 186 has a serrated front face 194 which is engaged by a cam roll 196 (not shown) to vibrate the inverter roll 134 about its axis, and a groove 198 in its rear face to receive a roll 200 on a lever 202 secured to a yoke 116 to render the shaker shaft assembly 136 ineffective, while the inverter roll 134 is operated by opening a divided pulley on shaft 72. The inverter roll 134 is operated by the cam roll 196 (not shown) through suitable mechanism. Where less nails are required in a batch, the nailways may communicate in pairs with a single passage 204 (not shown) and a further fastenersupplying apparatus may be driven from a further divided pulley on shaft 72.
