[Also in Group XXXV] In a glow discharge device, used in combination with similar devices or with resistors to provide a voltage divider of low power consumption (see Group XXXV), the discharge occurs between a conductor with a sharply curved end, preferably a pointed conductor, and a plate, said conductor and said plate being arranged opposite each other inside a tube filled with a gas of such a nature and under such a pressure that the glow discharge can occur under the desired potential difference, means being provided for varying the distance between the conductor and the plate and/or the pressure of the gas filling the tube. The filling comprises, for example, nitrogen or hydrogen, which, when the voltage across the device is higher than 6 or 7 kilovolts, should preferably be at atmospheric pressure. For lower voltages, it is advantageous to operate under a reduced pressure. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a device, Fig. 4 (Cancelled), in the form of a tube 23, which can be grounded, closed by end members 24 and 25 which, together with gas-tight jointings 46 are secured by caps 26 or. 27 which are screwed on to the tube. An insulating element 28, through which passes a conductor 29 which can be connected to a high voltage supply, is located within the end member 24, and the spaces between the element 28 and the member 24 and between the said element and the conductor 29 are filled with an insulating compound 30. Conductor 29 is connected to an electrode 31 provided with a point 32 and supported by an insulating cheek 33. A bearing 34, connected to cheek 33 by spacers 35, is secured to the end member 25. A plate-shaped electrode 38 is attached to a screw 37 carried by an internallythreaded sleeve 36 which is secured in an annular recess of the bearing 34. End member 25 is closed by an oil bath stuffing-box 39, held in position by a cap 40, through which passes a control-rod 41 attached to screw 37 by a key 42. The distance between the plate 38 and the point 32 can thus be varied by turning the rod 41. Play is taken up by a spring 43 interposed between a shoulder 37a of screw 37 and the bearing 34. End member 25 is provided with a filling valve 44 which can be closed by a plug 45. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
