664,915. Motor vehicle frames. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd., and MORPHEW, L. R. Feb. 17, 1950 [Jan. 18, 1949], No. 1335/49. Class 79(iv) A motor vehicle chassis frame comprises the construction of two subframes, an upper subframe consisting of channel sectioned longitudinal and transverse members joined together and a similarly fabricated lower sub-frame being substantially a mirror image of the upper sub-frame, the two sub-frames being joined together in the median plane of the chassis frame to form longitudinal and transverse members of closed hollow crosssection with reinforcing diaphragm plates between the sub-frames in the regions of the junctions of the longitudinal and transverse members. As shown the upper subframe A is formed of downwardly facing channel longitudinal members 11 having marginal flanges and arched portions towards its front and rear ends for accommodating suspension units, the members 11 being welded to transverse members 13, 14, 15, 16 having marginal flanges. The lower sub-frame D is constructed in a similar manner and the sub-frames are welded together through the marginal flanges. In order to strengthen the sub-frames in the regions of the joints between the longitudinal and transverse members, the flat diaphragm plates, such as 31, 32, 33, are placed between the upper and lower sub-frames. The region of the front suspension support, Fig. 3, is reinforced by plates 37, 38 with a diaphragm plate 39 and a channel member 40 secured, where one of the longitudinal members 21 of the lower sub-frame is cut away, by a bracket 61, and a support 46 is provided for a coiled spring of the suspension unit. A rear support for the engine is provided by diagonal struts 34, Brackets are secured to the longitudinal members for mounting the body &c.
