846,207. Vehicle bodies. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Oct. 15, 1958 [Oct. 18, 1957], No. 32924/58. Class 108(1). In a motor vehicle side sills 4 Fig. 2 extending upwardly at their forward ends 3 Fig. 1 and interconnected by transverse members 2, 5 a front end frame part 6 carrying the front wheels and located substantially between the side members 4 is connected to the transverse members 2, 5 only. In the example of Fig. 1 the front end frame part 6 comprises an open frame front portion 7 and a rear portion having arms 8, 10 connected to the transverse members 2, 5. The two portions 7, 8 are interconnected by welding bolts, rivets &c. after the shorter middle part of the chassis frame has completed its run on the assembly line, thus saving space on the line. The arms 10 may be formed from inverted troughs pressed into the floor plate and closed by a cover plate 13. Alternatively the plate may be pressed to an angle 10<SP>1</SP> Fig. 2a and closed by a Z-section 13<SP>1</SP>. In each case the duct formed may be used for air ventilation. In further examples the front portion 7 may be an L-shaped frame or of triangular form with a solid or open wall in side view and is attached to the rear portion along a plane 12 in the region of the dividing line between the passage space and the engine compartment. In one example an L-shaped portion 53 Fig. 10 is pivoted at 55 to a rear portion 56 welded between transverse frame members 50, 51. Resilient support between the two portions is provided by buffers 57.
