Abstract
664,754. Refractometers. RAYNER OPTICAL CO., Ltd., HOBSON, E. N., PIKE, J., and BATEMAN, A. J. Jan. 25, 1950 [Jan. 25, 1949], No. 1984/49. Class 97 (i). A refracting medium for use in a refractometer of the critical angle type comprises a first component of a material of high refractive index (i.e. 1.9 or higher) and having a top, flat surface, and a second component of a material of less than that of the first component by at least 0.1, the second component partially or wholly surrounding the first component below its top surface. In Fig. 1, the first component is a hemisphere as of diamond which fits a depression in the second component 11 having a flat surface 13 parallel to and slightly below the top flat surface 12 of the hemisphere 10 on which the substance to be tested is to be placed. The hemisphere 10 may be replaced by a liquid or may have the form of a cylinder, cone, prism or pyramid, the depression in the second component being shaped so that the first component fits thereinto. In Fig. 6,. the first component is a prism 20 and the second component is a prism 21 contacting only one of the vertical side faces of prism 20. These prisms may have inclined faces as shown in dotted lines. Specifications 257,127, [Class 97 (i)], and 462,332 are referred to.
