Class 120(ii) To enable the speed of a spindle for spinning, doubling or twisting to be raised above that normally imposed by the limitation of the bearing supporting the spindle within an outer stationary casing, an intermediate member is provided which supports the spindle within a bearing or bearings and which is itself supported within bearings in the stationary casing. Rotation of the intermediate member within the stationary casing as well as the rotation of the spindle within the intermediate member, enables the speed of the spindle to be increased. In one arrangement the spindle 1 has a shank 4 supported in a thrust bearing 7 which is itself supported by a pivot 8 in the casing 11. The bearing 7 is also attached to a rotatable sleeve 6 which supports the spindle shaft 4 within a bearing 5. The sleeve 6 is supported within the outer casing 11 by a bearing 9. In an alternative arrangement, the spindle is hollow and encloses the upper end of a rotatable shaft 26 which supports the spindle at one end and bears against an axial thrust bearing 27 at the other. Roller bearings 25 are interposed between the upper end of the shaft 26 and the hollow spindle shank 23 and a roller bearing 29 supports the shaft 26 to the outer casing 31. Tapered sleeves and the tapered ends of the shafts facilitate lubrication.
