Abstract
664,563. Continuous, ingot casting-machines. OSTENDORF, P. May 3, 1949 [May 3, 1948; Jan. 10, 1949], Nos. 11762/49 and 11763/49. Class 83 (i). Casting composite articles; moulds.- A continuous-casting mould, for producing ingots of light or heavy metals, with an outer cooling jacket which engages the mould along vertical sealing surfaces 7 is characterized in that these surfaces are in planes which are the resultants of the expansion of the mould in two directions at right angles. The mould may consist of plates 1, 1<SP>1</SP> welded at 2 and secured to wedge - section guides 6 which engage corresponding guideways 5 of the water jacket 3. The surfaces 7 are in planes which intersect along a vertical axial line. To avoid distortion, supporting bars 18, Fig. 1, may be used. The horizontal sealing surfaces 7<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6, at the top and bottom of the mould, may also be directed as are the surfaces 7, the four planes P intersecting, in a horizontal line O. The line of intersection need not be through the centre of the mould and may lie on one of the plates so that two of the sealing surfaces also lie in the plate, the other being more steeply inclined. In a modification, the plates 1, are replaced by U-section bars 1<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 2, and the jacket consists of two parts 3 sealed at surfaces 7 with guides 6, and two hollow parts 3<SP>1</SP> which engage the parts 3 along surfaces 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP> having the same function as the surfaces 7 and set off stepwise at 8. Vertical channels 9 serve to drain off escaping water. For forming plated ingots each plate 1 is secured to two guides 6, Figs. 3, 4, and all extend much above the bars 1<SP>11</SP> to which they are not fixed but are instead fixed to a bottom mould-piece 12 having hydraulic or other means 14 for moving it down during pouring. The faces of the plates 1 may have dovetail grooves 10 near their vertical edges to receive some of the molten metal. The cooling- chambers may be divided up by internal walls or be duplicated. The mould may be used in inclined or horizontal position if a suitable pouring head is provided. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the inclination of the surfaces 7, 7<SP>1</SP> should be modified to allow for the fact that the rise in temperature of the guides 6 is not so great as that of the plates 1, 11. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
