Abstract
664,329. Assembling force fits; jointing. CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. Oct. 11, 1949 [Nov. 23, 1948], No. 26073/49. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a method of shrinking a pin 15 on an oil drill pipe 10 the pin and pipe are conically tapered over the length of engagement and are threaded over a portion 20 intermediate of smooth engagement faces 11, 17. The parts have an interference fit in respect of the pitch diameters of the threads and the engagement faces 11, 17 in the fully engaged position in which the pipe end 13 engages a shoulder 14 on the pin. The pipe is initially screwed up hand-tight on the pipe end and oil at a pressure of 20,000 p.s.i. approximately is introduced into the gap between the threads from an oil line attached to a threaded hole 19 in the pin 15 to expand the sleeve and enable it to be screwed to the fully-engaged position. A box 28 adapted to be screwed on to the pin 15 in the normal manner by standard coupling threads on their respective portions 27, 29 may be similarly shrunk over a pipe end 34 at engagement faces 36, 37, the abutment faces 13 and 14 being omitted. After completion of the joints the holes 19 may be sealed by a short plug covered by lead or solder.
