[Also in Group XL (c)] In testing rotary apparatus, wherein the variable being measured is translated by a pick-up into a corresponding electrical quantity, the necessity for slip rings to conduct the electric quantity from the rotary device to a stationary meter or indicator is avoided by transmitting the quantity by radio. Vibrations, torsional strain, centrigual force, stress, temperature etc., may be indicated in this way. The transmitter may include its own power supply in the form of batteries, or power may be supplied to it through slip-rings or from a generator rotating with the apparatus. As shown, for testing a turbine wheel for vibration, the turbine wheel 10 is secured together with a heavy recording wheel 50 to a stub shaft 32 adapted to be driven through a disengageable coupling 51, 52 by a motor drive shaft 56. The rotating turbine wheel is vibrated by a stationary electromagnet 60 and the vibrations of the wheel or blade 11 are detected by a pickup 12 secured to the recording wheel 50 in any of the radially arranged positions 62. The pick-up output is led by a lead 13 to a radio transmitter 14 secured within the hollow shaft 53 and connected to slip rings 16-19. The slip ring 16 acts as an aerial while the other slip rings are used to feed the external power supply to the transmitter. The coupling 51, 52 permits of easy disconnection of the lead 13 from the transmitter when the stub shaft 32 is removed for securing a fresh turbine wheel thereto. In operation the casing 37, 38 enclosing the rotating parts is evacuated by a vacuum pump connected to the duct 42. The transmitter may be frequency or amplitude modulated and at the receiver a C.R.T. indicator may be used. The transmitter may alternatively be mounted on the wheel 50. Two or more variables may be transmitted in turn by a single transmitter, or separate transmitters may be used for each variable.
