[Also in Group XXIX] Apparatus for producing a first derivative component in a known servo-system comprises a 'fluid-friction drive 10 between the output shaft 15 and a driven shaft 16 constricted against turning by a spring 17 or similar device, so that the angular displacement of the driven shaft 16 is proportional to the speed of the driving shaft 15, this displacement being translated into a proportionate voltage, A.C. or D.C., by the corresponding movement of the slider 20 of a potentiometer 22 attached to the shaft 16. The driving shaft 15 may be geared to the output shaft of the servo system, and the potentiometer 22 made to the appropriate law. The potentiometer 22 may be a pneumatic valve, or control such a valve electrically.
