Abstract
776,657. Electric position control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 20, 1954 [Oct. 28, 1953], No. 29816/53. Class 40 (1). In a remote control system, the angular position of a shaft is controlled by driving it from a constantly rotating shaft through a substantially instantaneously operated clutch under control of the usual error signal, so that the torque available from the controlled shaft is constant during movement thereof. A clutch as described in Specification 656,921, [Group XIX], may be used, in which case should the error signal exceed a permissible value it produces pulses in a generator 2 or 2<SP>1</SP>, according to the sense of the error signal, at a recurrence rate corresponding to the error signal magnitude, these pulses engaging the associated clutch 3 for the duration thereof so that the controlled shaft 4, driven through a differential 5 from the two clutch outputs, runs at an average rate and in a direction corresponding to the error signal. An over-riding control may effect continuous engagement of the clutch.
