[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 6, 1947.] Class 110(ii) [Also in Group XXXIII] In a hydraulic motor, or turning gear, having alternate vanes and abutments 26, 16, the ends of the working chambers are packed by rings 76, 78 having recesses 82 into which liquid, at substantially working pressure, is allowed to seep. The apparatus may be used as turning gear to alter the pitch of aircraft propellers, the ring 20 being provided with splines 24 for attachment to the propeller blade shank. Vanes and abutments are provided with packing 62, 58 which may be strips of leather, rubber or plastic material. Liquid flows into and out of annular chambers 28, 30 from conduits 32, 34 or 36, 38 under control of the aircraft pilot, or an automatic governor, and into one pair of working chambers 46, 48 or 54, 56. The chamber 28 communicates through passages 42, 44 in the member 14, with chamber 46-48, and chamber 30 communicates through passages 50, 52 with chambers 54, 56. In the example shown, for a right-hand rotating propeller, conduits 32, 34 are closed by flaps. During movement of the vanes, liquid vented from chambers 46, 48 passes through passages 42, 44 and chamber 28 into the propeller hub. Oil seal rings 66 of triangular cross-section and resilient washers 68 co-act with rings 76, 78 to seal the working chambers. Due to flexure of the rings 76, 78 the pressures behind the pressure chamber is greater than the pressure behind the chamber being vented. Packings 66a and 84 are provided.
