Abstract

603,115. Fluid-pressure servo motor-control systems. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Oct. 2, 1945, No. 25567. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1944. [Class 135] Apparatus for adjusting the blades of a propeller whilst turning comprises a fluid-pressure servomotor which rotates with the propeller shaft and is enclosed in a stationary casing sealed where the propeller shaft passes through it. In an embodiment, the servomotor comprises twin pistons 46, 47 working in a cylinder interposed in the propeller shaft 2. When the pitch of the propeller blades is to be adjusted, a signal is transmitted through a hydraulic circuit at 12 to move a piston 11 against its spring loading 68. This movement is transmitted to a slide 66 and then through a floating lever 67 to a piston valve 10 which controls the flow and exhaust of pressure fluid through lines 17, 18, grooves 19, 20, and passages 63, 64, to and from the servo-cylinder. The subsequent movement of the servo-piston moves rod 48 to alter the pitch of the propeller blades and also moves a disc 74 along the shaft 2, the disc being provided with a groove in which the other end of the floating lever is housed so that the control valve 10 will be recentred to the neutral position shown. The pistons may be replaced by rotary elements of the helical vane type. The control valve casing is formed in two sections 4, 5 constituting a bearing for the rotating servo-cylinder. The stationary casing is supported from a rigid framing by springs of which there may be one or more on each side, and abutments limit the rolling action of the casing. A pump carried inside the stationary casing and driven from shaft 2 draws oil from a sump formed in the casing and delivers it to an external reservoir. The propeller shaft where it passes through one end of the casing is provided with lubricating holes by which oil is led to the space between the propeller shaft and shaft 48. Oil leaking past the stuffing box is led back into the stationary casing.
