663,710. Aircraft arresting-gear. MAC TAGGART, SCOTT & CO., Ltd., MATTHEW, J. C., and BARTLETT, J. L. March 13, 1948 [Feb. 27, 1947], No. 5678/47. Class 4. In aircraft arresting gear of the type wherein a rope span is stretched transversely across the path of the landing aircraft, the retarding force exerted by the braking mechanism during arrestment is related directly to, and controlled directly by, the tension in that part of the rope adjacent one of the guide pulleys over which the rope is passed, and which pulley is arranged through suitable controlling means to control the retarding force in such manner that the force is, to a large degree, rendered independent of the inertia of the rope and braking mechanism. A rope a is led over pulleys b, b' and guide pulleys d, d<SP>1</SP> on either side of the runway and reeved over moving and fixed cross head pulleys e, e<SP>1</SP> of a hydraulic cylinder and ram arrangement f which, when compressed by de-' flection of the rope a discharges liquid into a pipe g<SP>1</SP> through which the flow is controlled by a needle valve g<SP>2</SP>. The rate of flow of liquid and consequent retardation of the aircraft is balanced by a piston m acting within a cylinder n and connected to the valve g<SP>2</SP> by an arm p and a rod l pivoted at k to a pair of links i, i<SP>1</SP> which in turn are pivoted on the structure at j and deflected by variations in the tension of the rope a. The pressure on the piston m is controlled through a pipe o from a cylinder v and a piston u acted on by a constant pressure piston q through the medium of a pivoted arm t and a sliding control s which may be manually controlled or automatically controlled by a rack and pinion mechanism (not shown) influenced by the movement of the ram f. In an alternative arrangement (not shown) the piston q may be centrally placed in a cylinder and controlled by differential pressures from a venturi placed in the pipe g<SP>1</SP>.
