Abstract

663,627. Screening apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and SHERWEN, J. W. April 27, 1948. No. 11542/48. Class 117. [Also in Group XXX] A vibrating conveyer (or screen) (Fig. 1) comprises a material containing trough 4 having a first means (e.g. magnetic vibrator 21) to reciprocate the trough in either direction of conveyance; a second means (e.g. magnetic vibrator 9) to reciprocate the trough in the up-and-down direction; and means for changing the relative timing of the two reciprocations to select, one of the two desired directions of movement of the material. Fig. 1. - Rigid frame 1 rests resiliently on rubber shoes 2 and carries on bracket 25 the core 23 of magnet 21, the armature 22 of which is fixed to trough 4 resiliently supported by leaf springs 5 fixed to frame 1 so that energization of the magnet 21 reciprocates the trough horizontally. Also, secured to frame 1 by brackets 11 is the core 10 of magnet 9, the armature 12 of which is fixed to pendulous weight 13, the latter resting on springs 14-15 on the brackets 11, so that energization of magnet 9 causes the up-and-down reciprocation of the pendulous weight 13 and the vertical vibrations are transmitted through frame 1 and springs 5 to the trough 4. Trough 4 therefore receives two sets of vibrations. The A.C. current used may be rectified using one halfway metal rectifier for each magnet, and reversal of current through one rectifier serves to reverse the direction of conveyance by thus changing the phase of the impulses in the one direction. Fig. 4.-The two vibrations are applied to trough 35 by magnets 40 and 41, which magnets together with trough-supporting springs 36 rest on plate 37 secured at its centre by packing plate 39 to frame 38 resting on rubber feet 49, the flexibility of plate 37 contributing to the vibration of the trough. Two or more such troughs may be coupled together to form a single longer trough.
