Abstract

663,467. Lamp holders. SMART & BROWN (ENGINEERS), Ltd., and STEVENS, B. Dec. 5, 1949 [Dec. 4, 1948], No. 31454/48. Class 38 (i). In a holder for one end of a double-ended tubular lamp, socket contacts for receiving lamp pins, and an element comprising part of the holder are movable longitudinally against independently mounted springs so that subsequent to insertion of the lamp pins into the sockets, longitudinal movement of the lamp can be continued to enable the pins at the other end of the lamp to be aligned with and inserted in a similar holder by reverse longitudinal movement of the lamp. The sockets 1 are mounted, e.g. by soldering, in the ends of conical springs 5 and are loosely coupled by an insulating strip 2. The bases of the springs lie in recesses 12 in the holder base 4 and have leads connected to their bent-out ends. Alternatively the bases of the springs may lie in metal cups having radial lugs to which the leads are connected. A hood-like cover 6 constituting said element and having flared contact entry apertures 7 encloses and limits upward movement of the sockets and is capable of sliding movement along pillars 13 which hold together the base 4 and a circular casing 9. Springs 11 on said pillars urge the cover to its outermost position shown in which flanges 8 thereon engage flanges 10 on the casing 9. The pillars are hollow and tapped to receive mounting screws. Both the sockets and the cover are also capable of rocking and slight lateral movement to accommodate inaccuracy in the lamp construction. When both ends of the lamp have been inserted in the holders, an equilibrium position of each holder will be obtained wherein the sockets are pressed out of engagement with the cover 6 which will also be pressed in to some extent by the end of the lamp.
