Abstract

623,505. Snap-action switches; switch cases. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 6, 1947, No. 12257. Convention date, May 7, 1946. [Class 38(v)] A switch for embodying in an electrical appliance, such as a table lamp, has a flexible insulating cover plate 26 located by pins 31 on the hollow base 1 and provided with tags 34 at each corner which are lifted when wiring the switch and normally held down by clamps 27, 28. The base 1 has pockets 12, 13 housing the U-shaped ends 14, 17 of the fixed contacts 10, 11. The switch is wired by first removing the clamp 27 and lifting the two uncovered tags 34, and inserting one lead 24 of the flex into a curved groove 23 in the base, the tags then being bent down and the clamp 27 replaced. Next, removal of the clamp 28 permits lifting of the other two tags and insertion of the ends 21 of the other lead into grooves 19, 20, the conductor ends being soldered in notches 22 in the contact ends 14, 17; finally, these tags are bent down and the clamp 28 replaced. In a modification, Fig. 7, (not shown), a continuous tag may extend the full length of each side of the plate 26. A hollow push-button 36 non- rotatably slidable in the base 1, freely receives a spiral strip 42 and has ratchet teeth 38 which co-operate with teeth 40 in a disc 39 having a slot 41 receiving the strip 42. The lower end of the strip 42 is attached to an insulating toothed member 7 carrying a bridging contact 9 having a pivot point 30 held in a recess 29 in the plate 26 by a spring 44. Depression of the button 36 causes rotation of the contact 9 through 90 degrees to make or break the circuit, but when the spring 44 returns the button the disc turns relatively to it and the contact 9 is not rotated.
