Abstract

663,036. Adhesive-coated tape. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 3, 1947 [Jan. 2, 1947], No. 31920/47. Class 140. A pressure-sensitive adhesive tape comprises a soft, porous paper backing impregnated with a rubbery butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer and a normally tacky pressure-sensitive adhesive coating, the impregnation of the paper backing being carried out in two steps each comprising applying part of the total amount of the copolymer in aqueous dispersion and drying. After impregnation the paper may be coated on one side with a solution of shellac in alcohol and on the other side with a rubber-resin primer prior to the application of the adhesive. The primer and adhesive may comprise crude, reclaimed or synthetic rubber and natural or synthetic tackifiers. The butadiene - acrylonitrile copolymers may be modified with isoprene or styrene ; the dispersion may include a wetting agent such as a high molecular weight organic sulphonic acid or its ammonium salt, casein or glycerine. Specifications 603,109 and 482,575 are referred to. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 it is stated that the butadiene in the copolymer may be replaced by methyl butadiene. This Specification comprises also a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape having a soft porous paper backing impregnated with a butadiene acrylonitrile copolymer, dried and further impregnated with a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and methyl acrylate prior to the application of the adhesive. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
