Abstract
A composition for finishing fabrics contains polyvinyl alcohol, a wax, a water-soluble salt of a polyvalent metal, water and 50 to 98 per cent of raw starch based on the total weight of the solids. The amount of polyvinyl alcohol may be from 0.5 to 25 per cent of the total solids. Suitable waxes are: beeswax, candelilla, carnauba, chlorinated naphthalene, japan, montan, oxidized microcrystalline paraffin, ozokerite, paraffin, petroleum jelly and spermaceti and they may be present in amounts up to 25 per cent of the total solids. Suitable salts are: alum, the formate, acetate or sulphate of aluminium or zinc, zirconium ammonium carbonate or zirconium oxychloride, and the amount of salt may be from 5 to 100 per cent of the wax. Ethylene or propylene oxide condensates of long-chain fatty acids may be added as emulsifiers.
