Abstract
A composition for finishing fabrics contains polyvinyl alcohol, a wax, a water-soluble salt of a polyvalent metal, cooked starch, raw starch and water, the total amount of starch being from 50 to 98 per cent by weight of the total solids and the weight ratio of raw to cooked starch being at least 3 to 1. Suitable waxes are: beeswax, candelilla, carnauba, chlorinated naphthalene, japan, montan, oxidized microcrystalline paraffin, ozokerite, paraffin, petroleum jelly or spermaceti and they may be present in amounts up to 25 per cent of the solids. Suitable salts are: alum, the formate, acetate or sulphate of aluminium or zinc, zirconium ammonium carbonate, or zirconium oxychloride and the amount of salt may be from 5 to 100 per cent of the wax. Ethylene or propylene oxide condensates of long-chain fatty acids may be added as emulsifiers. Specification 622,944 is referred to.
