Abstract
662,797. Self-wringing mops. GREENLEAF, N. B. April 29, 1949, [Dec. 21, 1948], No. 11516/49. Class 19 A mop of the self-wringing type comprising wringer element hinged directly to a handle-carrying mophead and swingable from an upright position to compress a compressible absorbent mopping element secured to the mophead and a handle for the mop pivoted to said mophead and swingable from an upright position to a position against mophead in opposing relation and inclined at an acute angle to said wringer element when swung to position to compress or wring the mopping element. In the Figures the mophead comprises a flat plate 1, and its longitudinal edges are rolled to form channels 2. Metal lugs 3 are stamped up from the metal of the plate to engage a pivot pin 6'supported by the handle socket 5. The plate 1 may'be deformed to lock the pivot pin against displacement. An upstanding stop 9 is formed from the metal of plate 1 and limits pivotal movement of the handle socket 5. The mopping element 11 is of absorbent sponge-material, preferably cellulose sponge, and is in the form of a quadrangular block bevelled inwardly so that the thickness of the mopping element is greater at the forward edge than at the rear. Secured to the upper inclined face 12 of the mopping element is a relatively stiff fabric 13 which is adhered to the sponge material by a high temperature resistant adhesive, such as cellulose acetate, and this fabric extends beyond the forward upper edge of the mopping element, folding over it to enclose a fold of the mopping element as at 14. Adhered to the fabric backing 13 is a metal backing plate 15, the rearward longitudinal edge of which is rolled as at 16 and extends over the rearward upper. edge of the mopping element while the forward edge is elevated above the fabric 13 and is rolled to provide the guide edge 17. The guide edges 16 and 17 engage under and interlock with the channels 2 of the flat plate 1 to provide a sliding interlock between the mopping element and mophead. To lock the mopping element normally to assembled position the metal of the backing plate 15 is formed with stamped out resilient tongues 18 which are displaced above the plane of the backing plate and engage in indentures 19 to prevent longitudinal displacement. The spring tongues 18 resiliently engage in the indentions to effect the locking action as the mopping element is slid into the assembled position. The position of the pressure plate hinge formed by portions 20 of the longitudinal rearward edge 2 of the plate 1 being extended downward and rolled to make the hinge barrels limits the swinging movement of the presser plate 11 upward and forward when the mopping element is squeezed. The presser plate may, if desired, be hinged to the backing plate 15 of the mopping element, in which case the material of the mophead is formed into the hinge barrels. Specifications 659,511 and 659,943 are referred to.
