Description

W. H. RUSSELL.
COMBINATION DUSTPAIII AND BROOM APPLICATION FILED SEPT- 9,1920- Patented Apr. 19, 1921.
Irwe'nior. I t J I u WILLIAM HUNTINGTON RUSSELL, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINATION DUST-PAN AND BROOM.
Application fi1ed. September 9, 1920.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HUNTING- TON R-UssELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at 17 5 Bradley street, New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Dust- Pans and Brooms, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a combination broom and dustpan attached together by means of bands in such a way that the dustpan may be used to collect dust while still attached to the broom by stretching the said bands.
One of the-objects of the invention resides in the provision of a dustpan with a cover which keeps the dust from spilling. My invention provides a dustpan which may be present when sweeping is going on and it may be operated by either the hands or feet thereby saving time and energy without impeding, to any great extent, the use of the broom.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front view of the dustpan attached to a broom.
Fig. 2 is aside view of the dustpan against its rest constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 3 shows the dustpan in operation while attached to the broom.
Fig. 4 shows the chute hinged to the dust receptacle.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals of the preferred form of the inwention: 1 designates the dust receptacle of any suitable shape: 2. the chute upon which the dust is swept hinged to said receptacle; 3. the elastic supports attaching the broom to the said dustpan so that either of the two larger surfaces of the dustpan may be held by the said elastic supports against the rest when no external force is exerted on said elastic supports.
The handle is shown as 5 and 11 is a] stirrup for moving the dustpan by the foot. The broom is shown as 6 in the drawings, and 7 is a nail or other suitable means for fastening the elastic supports to the broom. There are detachable wire bands 9 which are used to hold the rest 13 on the broom and the holes in the rest through which the supporting bands pass are shown at 10.
Specification of Letters Patent.
'myself to elastic supporting bands.
Patented Apr. is, 1921.
Serial No. 409,251.
I do not limit myself to the size, shape or kind of the dustpan used, neither do I limit The supporting bands may pass on the outside of the rest rather than through it and by unclasping the supporting bands from the dustpan the broom and dustpan may be used separately.
To operate the dustpan when attached to the broom suflicient pressure is exerted by either the hand or the foot on the dustpan to stretch the elastic supports and bring the dustpan to the floor in the desired position. While sweeping is going on the dustpan may be moved about by the hand or feet. When dust is collected the side of the dustpan opposite the stirrup 11 is brought against the rest 13 and the chute 2 may be turned back on the dust receptacle to act as a cover.
- What I claim is:
1. A. dustpan attached to a broom. consisting of a dustpan which is automatically raised oil the floor when not in use by means of elastic supporting members with means of attaching the same to said dustpan and broom, a rest attached to the broom and a means for operating said dustpan by either the foot or hand, substantially as set forth.
2. A dustpan consisting of a dust receptacle with a cover attached thereto which opens so that dust may be swept. over the said cover into the dust receptacle, supporting elastic bands connecting the broom to the dustpan and capable of raising the dustpan off the floor and against a rest which is attached to the broom. substantially as set forth.
3. A dustpan attached to a broom by means of elastic supports capable of raising the dustpan off the floor and against a rest attached to the broom and means for detaching the said elastic supports from the dustpan, substantially as set forth.
4. A dustpan attached to a broom by means of elastic supports having the property of stretching and attached to the dustpan so as to allow the dustpan to be revolved between the said supports so that any surface may be brought against the rest which is attached to thebroonn substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
WILLIAM HUNTINGTON RUSSELL.
