Abstract
A mixture of lower aliphatic alcohols consisting mainly of isopropyl alcohol and some n-propyl alcohol, and containing acetals and carbonyl compounds as impurities, is subjected to azeotropic distillation together with water and cyclohexane to produce as distillate ternary azeotropic mixtures of the alcohols, cyclohexane and water, substantially free from said impurities; the distillate is condensed and cyclohexane is separated by decantation from the condensate. The given mixture is preferably subjected to a preliminary distillation to separate a fraction boiling from about 75 to 85 DEG C. which is then subjected to the azeotropic distillation. Water is preferably added to the condensate before separating the cyclohexane. The aqueous solution remaining may then be fractionally distilled to separate the aqueous azeotropes of isopropyl and n-propyl alcohols, as distillate. The process is particularly applicable to the mixture obtained by hydrogenation of a fraction containing propionaldehyde, acrolein, methyl, acetone, allyl alcohol, iso-and n-propanols, iso- and n-butanols, isolated from the products of the partial oxidation of butane or mixtures of propane and butane.
