Abstract
662,468. Miners' safety lamps. KOEHLER MANUFACTURING CO. March 11, 1949 [Dec. 20, 1948], No. 6708/49. Class 75(iv) In a miner's safety lamp the height of the chimney 6 and bonnet 13 is less than the distance between the dome 16 and a lock ring 20, which is removably fastened to the fuel fount 2 from which a wick extends, the remaining space between the dome and lock ring being filled by spacing and ring numbers and the parts being held together by a pluralty of removable retaining rods 18, which are anchored to the dome 16 and lock ring 20, and the effective length of which can be altered by a screwthread adjustment. The slotted heads of the rods 18, which are in the form of elongated bolts, are received in countersunk holes in the lower side of the ring 20 which is screwed on to an integral, annular neck 3 of the fount. The rods pass through spacing tubes 21, through a middle ring 14, the bonnet 13, a top ring 15, short spacing tubes 22 and the dome 16, finally receiving nuts 23 which rest in depression in the top of the dome. Both the rings 14,15 have numerous air inlet holes. Air inlet slots 4 are formed in the neck 3 of the fount, and an air admission ring 5 resting on the fount inside the neck 3 provides a seat for a gasket 7 and a glass chimney 6, on the top of which another gasket 9 and ring 8 are carried. The flanged base of the inner gauze cone 10 is clamped to the ring 8, while the flanged, cupped base of the outer cone 12 rests on the flange of the inner cone. A spring ring' 26 inserted between the middle ring 14 and the flange of the outer cone 12 compensates for any expansion or contraction of the parts due to changes in temperature. To service the lamp the fount 2 is removed by unscrewing the neck 3 from the ring 20, whereupon the retaining rods 18 can be removed.
