Abstract

662,357. Gas turbine plant. GALLIOT, J. A. N. March 8, 1950 [March 8, 1949], No. 6240/49. Addition to 608,465. Class 110(iii) A gas turbine plant as described in Specification No. 608,465 has the turbine blades cooled by the passage of cold air taken from the interior of the apertured wheel. The invention is described with reference to the embodiment described in the Specification referred to in which the apertured turbine wheel is provided with spokes formed as helicoidal vanes so as to constitute the primary element of an auxiliary axial flow compressor feeding the main compressor. The turbine wheel is formed of a number of webs or spokes comprising a turbine blade 12 and a primary compressor blade 15 having a connecting segment 42 which forms a part of the wheel rim. The segments 42 have alternate mortises and tenons 45, 46 which engage with adjacent segments and may be grooved at 47 to receive clamping rings of V-section. One or more holes 49 of cylindrical or tapering shaped are formed and provided longitudinally through the blades 12 and segments 42 to allow cooling air to pass from the interior of the wheel through the blades. This cooling air may be mixed with the gases exhausting from the turbine which may be used to suck the cooling air through the blades.
