Abstract

662,262. Making wire mesh tape. SPECHT, H. G. May 26, 1949 [April 9, 1949], No. 14146/49. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Group I] Wire.-A method of making wire mesh tape, particularly for use in a filter screen, consists in forming longitudinallyspaced projections on a plurality of wires, carrying said wires into a guide to position and retain them in tape-forming relation with the projections laterally disposed, and while held in such relation carrying them into a heating unit 22 to cause adherence of the wires to each other. The projections 11 may be formed on both sides of each wire 10 and other wires 13 of uniform cross-section are held between the wires 10 and passed through the heating unit. The wires 10, 13 may be of metal or alloy which will cause the projection to join to the wires 13 upon the application of heat, or either or both of the wires 10, 13 may be coated with an easily fusible material such as solder, zinc, silver or the like. Heat may be applied by gas burners, induction heating or resistance welding. In making a cylindrical filter screen, the tape is wound spirally around a frame and the edges of adjacent turns joined by welding, soldering or the like.
