Abstract
662,259. Eddy-current brakes. THORNTON, A. A. (Warner Electric Brake Manufacturing Co.). May 25, 1949, No. 14006/49. Class 35. An axially divided soft iron eddy-current cylinder 22, 23 for an eddy-current brake has a series of fan blades 26 secured, e.g. by brazing, along its outer surface and to supporting rings 27, 28 which have diverging inner surfaces to induce a flow of air laterally across the cylinder surfaces. Eddy-currents are induced in the cylinders 22, 23 by a pair of stationary imbricated pole members 9, 10 excited by coils 16, cooling air being drawn through channels 20, 21 between the poles 18. The supporting rings 27, 28, which are brazed to the edges of the blades, are spaced by tongues 36 on the fan blades, thus forming ventilation outlets 31. The eddy current member is supported for rotation on flange 32 which is integral with the ring 28 and serves to guide the flow of air. Lugs 37, 39 projecting through milled slots 38, 40 in the rings are peened over to secure the assembly. A conical baffle 46 guides the cooling air along paths 45, 24, 33 to the outlets 31, as shown, the fanning action being increased by extending the blades inwardly at 42, if required.
