Abstract

661,848. Filters. JENNINGS, I. C. Nov. 14, 1949. No. 29104/49. Class 46. [Also in Groups VIII, XIII and XXX] A suction box for a travelling screen filter has its upper surface formed from a series of closelyspaced small-diameter rollers F, Fig. 1, each roller being composed of a plurality of hollow imperforate roller segments, a stationary rod 7. Fig. 2, extending through each roller, end supports 31, Fig. 3, and intermediate supporting brackets Fig. 5, 8, for the rod 7, and bearings 9 mounted within each roller segment. The inner races of the bearings are positioned by stationary bushings 8. Sealing plugs 10 are screwed into the ends of each roller segment to secure the outer races and to keep water from the bearings. In an alternative construction the roller segments are secured to a rod 22 by setscrews 25a Fig. 5. and each bracket 6 includes a broad bearing portion received within end portions of the segments. The rod 22 then rotates with the roller in roller bearings 23. Sealing caps 27 to protect and correctly position the bearings are secured to intermediate brackets 6 and to end plates 3. A thrust bearing 24 holds the roller segments in proper axial relation. A sealing member 4, Fig. 6, having a face conforming generally to the contour of a wide sector of a roller, is provided at each end of the series of rollers. The member 4 is composed of segments 16, Fig. 10, each segment having at its roller-contacting face a number of ribs 17a, d, f and g with infervening closed channels 19, 17, 17e and 21. The channel 17 having apertured ribs 17b spaced along it is supplied with water from a manifold 18 to provide a seal between the member 4 and its adjacent roller. The members 4 are secured tc angle irons 15 which may be adjusted in position on the framework 1, Fig. 2. Sealing members 14 supported on the frame members 3 extend between the ends of the rollers F to a point just inside the edge 36 of the paper stock or other material on the wire screen C. When roller bearings are provided in the intermediate brackets and in the side members, the roller segments may be made solid and the continuous rod F dispensed with.
