661,847. Supply systems for welding arcs. HENDRIKS, J., and PLOEG, J. V. D. Nov. 14, 1949 [Sept. 22, 1949], No. 29074/49. Class 38 (iv). To reduce the voltage which can occur at the electrodes of arc welding apparatus when supplied from a welding transformer 1, particularly on open circuit, a choke 4 is included in the primary circuit 2 of the transformer and bridged under the control of a relay 10 having a voltage coil 9 connected across the transformer secondary 3 and a current coil 8 included in the secondary circuit acting in opposition such that upon application of the supply to terminals 11, 12 the voltage coil 9 is energized to open the relay contacts 7, remove the bridge 5 and thereby ensure a reduced voltage at the welding terminals 13, 14 until the striking of the arc and welding current flows, whereupon the secondary voltage falls and allows the contacts to reclose. The subsequent welding current in coil 8 holds the contacts 7 closed to replace the short-circuit on the choke until the welding current ceases. The arrangement avoids saturation and hence over-heating of the relay core.
